Diesel Gelling or Another Cold-Start Problem?

If the engine cranks at normal speed, starts briefly, and then loses power or stalls, restricted fuel flow is one possible cause. Use Winterized Diesel Fuel

Winter fuel may include a blend of No. 1 diesel and No. 2 diesel or specialized cold-flow improvers that lower the temperature at which fuel remains usable. Purchasing fuel from a supplier that prepares for seasonal conditions can significantly reduce the risk of winter fuel problems.

Add Winter Diesel Additives Before Fuel Gets Cold

Cold-flow improvers and anti-gel additives help modify wax crystal formation, improving fuel filter performance in low temperatures. These additives must be mixed into the fuel before wax crystals begin forming. Adding anti-gel treatment after fuel has already gelled is generally much less effective.

Keep Fuel Tanks as Full as Practical

Partially filled tanks leave more room for condensation to form as temperatures fluctuate. Keeping tanks reasonably full helps reduce moisture accumulation while minimizing the risk of water contamination that can freeze inside the fuel system.

What to Do if Your Diesel Fuel Has Already Gelled

If you suspect fuel gelling, avoid repeatedly trying to start the engine. Excessive cranking can drain the batteries and create additional problems without restoring fuel flow.

Instead:

  • Move the equipment into a heated building if possible.
  • Allow the fuel system and filters time to warm.
  • Replace a fuel filter if it has become plugged with wax.
  • Use products specifically designed to reliquefy gelled fuel, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Once the fuel system has thawed, refill with properly winterized diesel if needed.
